Friday Five: Hip to be Square

I could not resist choosing the most obvious title possible for this post. Anyways. As you might have gathered from my last post I am all about the crocheted square right now. It made sense to round up a few of the ones I like the most.

Hexagon How-To

This one is next!! When I finally get around to working on a scrap-ghan, it will be made of beautiful interlocked hexagons.

Summer Garden Granny Square

This is the one I tried with the Bernat Mosaic in Psychedelic. I am really liking it so far. I love circles in squares!

African Flower Hexagon

Holy gorgeous! Imagine some bold African Flower cushions. My couch needs some.

Basic Granny Square

I also started one of these. I am just going to go until I run out of yarn. There is something so classic and cozy about a basic granny throw. This is good TV watching crafting. But I also think crazy colorwork is good TV knitting so I am not the right person to ask.

Flower Square

This is another one of those patterns I need a little girl to make things for. But it’s a good thing there are none, because I would have some sort of repetitive stress injury by now. But seriously cute.

Knitting Camp!

My computer is fixed and I just got back from a wonderful and relaxing weekend at the Woseley Wool Fall Fiber Frolick. It was awesome.  I met a lot of new people, ate a lot of really good food and learned some new things.

I took 3 workshops: steeking, drop spindling and amigurumi crochet. Steeking is not as scary as I thought it would be.  I feel ready to make little O a fair isle vest. Drop spindling was fun, I felt really accomplished making some yarn. I ended up with 44m of crazy thick and thin (but mostly thick) yarn that I am knitting up a Buttonhead with. Finally in amigurumi crochet I  learned that I was crocheting all wrong (which I suspected), and so I finally learned how to crochet and made the funniest little strawberry (but the boys love it and that is all that matters).

I managed to finish two little projects over the weekend. B requested that I make him a tiny dog for his pocket, with a pocket. So I finally got around to making Wasabi the Gregarious Pug which is the cutest little pattern. Unfortunately I think it looks more like some sort of fox-bear hybrid, but B likes it and that is all that matters. I was going to work more on O’s Kai-Meis, but I needed a break from tiny needles. I’ve also really been wanting to knit up some earmuffs, so I looked up a pattern. I came across this one, which is thrummed, which was perfect. I had some colored fleece in my welcome bag from the retreat that I used along with the yarn I dyed. They are so dorky cute. I don’t know who is going to wear them, but I feel better having made them.

Cheap yarn and stuff I am working on.

So as I mentioned, I am down in the states. Instead of buying some pretty yarn, I bought a tube of Red Heart (in Spring Green) from Walmart. It is an awesome green, and I have a perfect use for it  and all of it’s plastic-y goodness. More on that in a post soon when I get back and caught up. I also found some Caron Simply Soft in Chocolate for the Sugar Bear Cardi I plan to start eventually. I am half cast-on for that one.

I am working on the cutest project I can’t show anyone yet, and it hurts! And tomorrow in the car I hope to get a lot more done on the Argante Shawl I am working on. Especially since I just saw Andrea’s Shawl which would look amazing in some of the Noro I have.

My first Socktoberfest sock looks amazing, but is a bit of a failure, as in it does not quite fit its recipient. The toe and heel are flaming orange, it’s awesome. I don’t want to frog it, but I haven’t a clue what to do with it. I’ve started again though and am just turning the heel on a new teeny tiny sock. I am *hoping* to do a mini Kai-Mei sock, but my sock-fu is not the strongest, so we will see how that turns out. If not, it will be a plain sock but I am hopeful. I finished B’s monster scarf, I just need to add some monster to it.

Tuesday Ten: Mittens!

It’s no secret that I love knitting mittens. They are kind of like knitting socks, but a little less tricky. Also, they don’t hide in shoes. In a climate as cold as the one I live in, cute mittens are a must, and a dazzling pair are sure to get noticed. Here are ten mittens I would knit if I had the time and more hands to wear them all.

Anu’s Mittens

I like the simple snowflakes on these a lot. Very winter-y.

DinoMitts

Seriously, these are amazingly adorable. Dinosaurs. On your hands. 16 year old me would be all over these.

Snapdragon flip-tops

Ok, this is a really beautiful pair of mittens. I’ve always had a fondness for snapdragons, and they aren’t exactly the easiest flower to incorporate into something. I love the photographs too. The orange with the little sky blue button is amazing. And the flip top part is done really well.

Give a Hoot

Cute owls! Hoot hoot! The owl cable is my favorite use of cables.

Green Autumn (Druid Mittens)

I’ve come so close to casting on for these so many times. But never quite see to have the time/reason. The detailing and cables in them are amazing. The kind of project you could get lost in.

Snowbird Mittens

Birds! And snowflakes! With tiny trees and and banners. These mittens seem like the perfect holiday pair. They look like a great intricate colorwork project too. Which is my favorite kind!

Psychic Hearts

I will admit, what drew me to this pattern is it’s title. Psychic Hearts is one of my favorite songs. The mittens are pretty cute too! A simple colorwork pattern perfect for a beginner.

Grandma’s Mittens (it’s at the bottom of the page)

Flowers and a folksy feel make for a great colorful pair of mittens.

Tatiana

This is a great play on the Matryoshka doll! All those little finger dolls inside a mitten doll shell. Genius.

Vancouver 2010 Olympics Mittens

A great pattern with a Canadian feel. It’s a very now pattern.

Tuesday Ten: Slippers!

Just in time to start your Christmas knitting, here are some of my favorite knit and crochet slippers. Everyone needs toastier feet. Well, maybe not down by the equator, but for that, there is cotton yarn, right? As usual the photo links to the Ravelry page and the title somewhere else.

Twinkletoes

Feel like a pretty ballerina, even when you are sitting in your pjs watching tv. I like the long ties on these so so much and they are on my “to knit” list.

Oma House Slippers

I really like the look of crochet slippers. I imagine the shaping is easier. This is a nice clean looking slipper

Ballet Flats

The intarsia flowers on these are a great feminine detail.

Cabled Slipper Socks

I like the sole edging on these so much! And the cables! Nothing feels more warm and cozy than woolen cable-knits to me.

Ladies Crochet Basics Mary Janes

Another good pair of crochet slippers. I really like the toe detail here.

Cottage Slipper Socks Knit

Nice, warm, and simple.

French Press Felted Slippers

These are gorgeous slippers. I need to knit a pair.

Adult Mary Jane Skimmers

These remind me of Keds. I think its the color combinations and the sole side detail which I love.

Prairie Boots

I’ve knit these and they are so great. The pattern is so well written and the finished project is really cozy and attractive.

Mary Jane Slippers

A nice classic-look slipper. I really like the shaping in the toe and the i-cord edging.
